Additional Information
James comes from a sailing family and he took up the sport when he was 5 years old. His sister Katie is Australias top female match-racer, while James is a two-time winner of the World Youth title.
In 1999, at 19 years of age, Spithill was appointed skipper of the Syd Fischers Australian Americas Cup entry Young Australia 2000. Sailing the oldest boat with the youngest crew and the smallest budget, Spithill quickly earned the respect of the more senior skippers as he led the campaign with a dignity that belied their sub-par performance.
Perhaps their most glowing accolade in Auckland was that Paul Cayard sought to have them join his team as sparring partners after Young Australia was eliminated.
During 2000, James returned to the match-racing circuit with Young Australia crewmembers Ben Durham, Andy Fethers and Joey Newton. The four had sailed together and against each other in their days as youth sailors.
The crews physically aggressive sailing style is well suited to the smaller, lively boats on the European circuit, and provides the sort of action that keeps spectators entertained.
James is a competent amateur boxer and also enjoys skiing on water and snow.
