Additional Information
With his four Olympic medals, including three Golds, a world championship title and numerous continental and national titles, Jochen Schümann is the most successful sailor in German yachting history.
Originally from East Germany, Schümann began sailing at the age of 12. He picked up his enthusiasm from a school teacher who used to build boats. Schümann spent one winter building an Optimist dinghy, an 8-foot long trainer, and then sailed it the next summer.
“The technical side of things is so important in sailing that it is really very useful to have some relevant knowledge and skill,” Schümann says.
His won his first Olympic Gold medal in the Finn class at the 1976 Games in Montreal. His next two were won in the Soling class in 1988 and 1996. He also won a Silver medal at the 2000 Games in Sydney.
Schümann’s third Gold medal in 1996 was won 20 years after his first and also earned him the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year award for his complete domination. Schümann won the fleet racing competition, defeated the British crew 3-0 in the semifinals and then easily swept the gold medal races against the Russians. Schümann’s performance ranks as one of the best ever at an Olympic regatta.
Schümann has enjoyed success in big boat racing as well. He was a member of two German teams in the Admiral’s Cup, a multi-race series of three-boat teams held off England’s South Coast, that finished second (1995) and third (’97).
Schümann then moved onto the America’s Cup arena, where he broke in with FAST2000, the first ever Cup syndicate from Switzerland. Although an underfunded team that ultimately finished last in Louis Vuitton Cup 2000, Schümann, the helmsman, kept a bright perspective throughout it all.
He moved on to join Switzerland’s second ever Cup syndicate, and the results were diametrically opposed from the first effort. Schümann joined skipper Russell Coutts as a strategist and training boat helmsman, and went on to win the 32nd America’s Cup in 2003.
Schümann has remained with Team Alinghi and figures to feature prominently in its defense of the America’s Cup in 2007.
