LANGENARGEN, Germany (June 12, 2004) — Peter Gilmour’s Pizza-La Sailing Team, champions of the Swedish Match Tour 2003-’04, added another feather to their collective cap today at the Swedish Match Tour event in Germany.
Gilmour and crew, including Mike Mottl (AUS), Kazuhiko Sofuku (JPN), Yasuhiro Yaji (JPN) and local sailor Carsten Kemmling (GER), defeated Jes Gram-Hansen in Round Robin C.
In doing so they ran their record 10-0 (combined record between Rounds Robin A and C) and won the Mercedes Benz SLK 200 roadster, valued at approximately Euro 40,000 (approximately $47,000), from Match Race Germany sponsor Wuerttembergische Versicherungsagentur Speth.
Both teams entered the showdown with perfect 4-0 records after winning their first races of the day, Gilmour against Tino Ellegast (GER) and Gram-Hansen against Luc Pillot (FRA).
The showdown, in northwesterly winds between 14 and 18 knots, was over as soon as it started.
“The key was the pre-start,” said the 44-year-old skipper from Perth, Western Australia. “We were happy and lucky to get an advantage and it made all the difference.”
Gilmour, a three-time match-racing world champion, entered the pre-start with the favored starboard tack while Gram-Hansen’s Team Denmark, including Michael Arnhild (DEN), Christian Kamp (DEN), Rasmus Kostner (DEN), Henning Sohm (GER), came in on port tack.
Although to windward in the initial dial-up, Gilmour kept a position to leeward of Gram-Hansen throughout much of the 4-minute sequence.
With 30 seconds to the start, Gilmour tacked away to port after luffing Gram-Hansen, who fell off onto starboard.
Gilmour sailed toward the boat end and tacked to starboard with five seconds to the start gun.
Gram-Hansen approached on port and tacked to starboard to leeward of Gilmour as the gun sounded.
It was a bad position for Gram-Hansen, who was quickly rolled off the start line. And the match was essentially over.
The Pizza-La team led by 31 seconds at the windward mark, and added 15 seconds on the first run. The crews split sides of the second beat, Gilmour taking the right and Gram-Hansen the left, but it was to no avail for the Danish crew.
They took some time out of Gilmour on the run to the finish, but still finished 34 seconds behind.
“I guess I’ll have to walk home now,” Gram-Hansen said after the match.
Said Gilmour, “Obviously, I'm delighted to win. I told my crew to treat this match like a final. We treat every match seriously, but we took this one more seriously.”
The Pizza-La Sailing Team won Round Robin C with a perfect 7-0 mark, and will meet Bertrand Pacé and crew in the final in a replay of the Swedish Match Tour final in Croatia two weeks ago.
Pacé finished Round C second with a 5-2 mark after winning a tie breaker with Gavin Brady.
Gram-Hansen finished fourth at 4-3 and will meet Brady in the Petit Final.
