CASCAIS, Portugal (3:00 p.m.; July 31) — Russell Coutts squares off against Ed Baird in the final of the inaugural Portugal Match Cup, stage one of the 2004-’05 Swedish Match Tour.

New Zealander Coutts and Baird of the U.S. are the top two skippers this week. Coutts has won all 11 of his races, while Baird enters the final with an 11-2 record.

Coutts and his Danish crew of Michael Arnhild, Jes Gram-Hansen, Christian Kamp and Rasmus Kostner defeated Peter Holmberg and Team Alinghi, including Rodney Ardern, Murray Jones, Lorenzo Mazza and Pete Van Nieuwenhuyzen, 3-0 in the semifinals.

Baird’s Team Musto, Andy Horton, Guy Salter, Dean Phipps and Jon Ziskind, won their semifinal match 3-1 over Jesper Radich and Team Denmark, Jann Neergaard, Chresten Plinius, Pete Poulsen and Rasmus Winston.

The northerly that blew for the first four days disappeared today, and forced an hour postponement of the scheduled 12:00 p.m. start time.

Winds for the semifinal matches carried over from yesterday were light from the west, between 4 and 8 knots.

All racing is under postponement as the race committee waits for a predicted northwesterly, that’s blowing 15 to 18 knots about 10 to 12 miles offshore.

The race committee hopes to start the best-of-five final by 4:00 p.m., but it reserves the right to shorten the final to best-of-three, or even a one-race, sudden death showdown. The committee said it will wait until the wind is suitable.

“I’d rather have a one-race final in good winds than a light and shifty series,” said Principal Race Officer João Pedro Cascais.

The winner will earn 40,000 Euro ($48,117.98) and the runner-up 25,000 Euros ($30,073.74) of the 150,000 Euro ($180,442.50) prize purse.

Radich will race Holmberg in the petit final, with the winner earning 20,000 Euros ($24,058.99) and the loser 15,000 ($18,044.24).
