HAMILTON, Bermuda (Oct. 19, 2004) — Scott Dickson and Klaartje Zuiderbaan head a group of eight crews that have advanced to the championship round of the King Edward VII Gold Cup, the third event on the Swedish Match Tour.
The King Edward VII Gold Cup got underway last Saturday, Oct. 16, with two groups of eight competing in a single round-robin. The top three from each group advanced to the championship round, along with the two finalists from the Cicada Women’s International Match Racing Championship.
Dickson of the Long Beach (Calif.) Yacht Club won Group 2 of the qualifying round robin with a 6-1 record. For his efforts he faces Björn Hansen of Sweden, the No. 6 seed in the championship round.
“If you want to win The King Edward VII Gold Cup you have to beat everyone and we are looking forward to it,” Dickson noted. “The seeded skippers are professional sailors, but we are professional sailors, too.”
Zuiderbaan, of the Netherlands, won the Cicada Women’s International Match Racing Championship with a 3-0 defeat of Jenny Axhede of Sweden today on Hamilton Harbor. The two women’s teams go on to face the two most dominant America’s Cup personalities in the last 30 years.
Zuiderbaan races four-time America’s Cup winner No. 8 seed Dennis Conner, a four-time America’s Cup winner (1974, ’80, ’87 and ’88) in tomorrow’s Round 1 match, while Axhede advances to race No. 7 seed Russell Coutts, a three-time Cup winner (1995, 2000, ’03).
American Ed Baird, the co-leader of the Swedish Match Tour, the world’s No. 1-ranked match-racer and the No. 1 seed at the King Edward VII Gold Cup, will face fellow American Chris Larson in Round 1 of the event on Hamilton Harbor. Larson placed third in Group 1 with a 4-3 record.
American Brian Angel, who placed third at the Prince of Wales Bowl, the U.S. National Championship for match-racing, won Group 1 with a 5-2 record. He is pitted against Staffan Lindberg of Finland, the No. 5 seed, in the first round.
New Zealander Cameron Appleton, who narrowly missed qualifying last year, advanced this year with a 5-2 record, good for second in Group 1. The Etchells sailor will square off against Australian James Spithill, the helmsman of Italy’s Luna Rossa challenge. Spithill and Luna Rossa placed second in the match-racing portion of the recent Valencia Louis Vuitton America’s Cup regatta.
“We are happy we qualified; we came here with that goal in mind,” Appleton said. “Although we would love to hold that Gold Cup aloft at this stage we also face Spithill in the first round so anything can happen.”
Anthony Kotoun of Newport, R.I., placed second in Group 2 and will face No. 3 seed Peter Gilmour of Australia, the event’s defending champion and the reigning champion of the Swedish Match Tour.
No. 2 seed Mathieu Richard of France squares off against qualifier Cameron Dunn of New Zealand. Dunn finished 3-4 in Group 2, and advanced after winning a tiebreaker among four other skippers.
