Biography Mathieu began sailing at age 11 in the Optimist dinghy. He later moved to the two-person 420 dinghy and then into match-racing in 1998. He finds match-racing very interesting because it requires mastery of a varying skill to be at the top: boathandling, boatspeed, tactics, starts and communication. He also feels you need to be mentally and physically strong. He likes the fact that you can always improve your skills.
Mathieu finds the World Match Racing Tour very exciting. “You sail a lot of top-level events and have the opportunity to compete against the stars of match-racing and sailing in general, like Russell Coutts, Ed Baird, Peter Gilmour, and Bertrand Pacé. That is very exciting for me, especially when we beat them!”
Mathieu has been sailing with the same crew members since 2000, and began sailing the Tour in 2003-’04. After coming 2nd overall on the 2006-'07 season Mathieu has set a goal of placing 1st in the 2008 season.
