SWEDISH MATCH CUP
Marstrand, Sweden
July 5-10

JULY 10, 2005

UPDATE 18 // 5:45 p.m.
Peter Gilmour has added his sixth Swedish Match Cup title to his second consecutive Swedish Match Tour championship. Gilmour and the Pizza-La Sailing Team – Rod Dawson, Mike Mottl, Kazuhiko Sofuku and Yasuhiro Yaji – defeated Magnus Holmberg and Victory Challenge – Anders Dahlsjo, Lars Linger, Oskar Ljung and Mattias Rahm – 3-2 in the final. The fifth and deciding race was as close as every other match today. Gilmour led by 17 seconds at the first windward mark but Holmberg closed the gap to 7 seconds at the leeward mark and 8 seconds at the second windward mark.

Click on Swedish Match Tour TV in the left hand margin to watch the final race of yesterday’s quarterfinal match between Gilmour and Ed Baird. Gilmour beat Baird 2-1 in the series to clinch his second consecutive Swedish Match Tour championship. The file can be found under the highlights tab. It is titled Ed Baird vs. Peter Gilmour.

UPDATE 17 // 5:12 p.m.
Peter Gilmour evened the final of the Swedish Match Cup at 2-2 against Magnus Holmberg when he won Race 4. Gilmour was over early and Holmberg won the first cross, but Gilmour got to the right of Holmberg and then used starboard-tack advantage to sneak inside at the windward mark. Gilmour led by 8 seconds and the windward and leeward marks, and then 14 seconds at the windward mark a second time.

UPDATE 16 // 4:32 p.m.
Magnus Holmberg has opened a 2-1 lead over Peter Gilmour in the first to 3 points final of the Swedish Match Cup. Holmberg tied Gilmour in knots at the start of the third match and won by almost 1 minute. Gilmour was penalized twice in the pre-start.

UPDATE 15 // 3:50 p.m.
Magnus Holmberg evened the final of the Swedish Match Cup with a come-from-behind victory against Peter Gilmour in Race 2. Holmberg trailed around the first lap but got to the right side in a right shift on the second upwind leg and rounded the windward mark inside Gilmour.

Dean Barker won the Petite Final with a 2-0 victory of Peter Holmberg (ISV)

UPDATE 14 // 3:03 p.m.
Peter Gilmour won Race 1 of the Swedish Match Tour championship over Magnus Holmberg. Gilmour started at the left end of the line with Holmberg at the right end. Gilmour couldn’t cross Holmberg at their first meeting but he did at the second meeting. He then switched to the right side of the course and took a roughly 10-second lead around the windward mark. Gilmour added 3 seconds to that advantage on the first run and then doubled it on the second beat. He won by about five boatlengths. The winner is first to 3 points.

Dean Barker (NZL) won the first race of the Petite Final when he got a penalty on Peter Holmberg (ISV) early in the match. The winner is first to 2 points.

UPDATE 13 // 1:00 p.m.
Two-time Swedish Match Tour champion Peter Gilmour (AUS) and the Pizza-La Sailing Team will race Magnus Holmberg’s (SWE) Victory Challenge for the championship of the 12th annual Swedish Match Cup.

Sailing in a southwesterly wind between 12 and 15 knots, Gilmour disposed of Dean Barker (NZL), of Emirates Team New Zealand, while Magnus Holmberg defeated Peter Holmberg (ISV), of Alinghi.

Like yesterday’s Quarterfinal Round, both semifinal matches went the distance before the crews advanced by 3-2 scores.

Peter Holmberg seemed well on his way to advancing to the final in the fifth and final race against Magnus Holmberg. Peter Holmberg won the right side of the racecourse at the start and held a 22-second lead at the end of the first lap. Peter Holmberg held a similar lead at the end of the second lap.

Up the third beat of the three-lap race Magnus Holmberg got to the left and found a nice shift to get back into the match. Peter Holmberg luffed at the top of the leg hoping to create some separation. But he led by just 6 seconds at the third and final windward mark.

Peter Holmberg did a bear away set while Magnus Holmberg jibed around the windward mark. Sweden’s favorite match-racer jibed into a nice puff and ricocheted past the Alinghi helmsman. Magnus Holmberg won the race by about three boatlengths.

Gilmour and Barker had a gangbuster match. Their third and fourth races were two of the closest matches ever. Rarely were they separated by more than 5 feet. That’s right, 5 feet. And there were no penalties. It was all positioning.

With the score tied 2-2 Gilmour started the fifth match to leeward of Barker, who was on the Aussie’s windward quarter. They took starboard off the line and about one third of the way up the windward leg Gilmour was able to pinch off Barker. Halfway up the leg Gilmour, on port, crossed Barker by about two boatlengths and was away. He led by about 18 seconds at the first windward mark and 37 seconds at the first leeward mark. The race was never close again.

Gilmour is seeking to add his sixth Swedish Match Cup title to his second Swedish Match Tour championship, while Magnus Holmberg is attempting to win his first Swedish Match Cup. Ironically, the man who created the Swedish Match Cup has never won it.

In racing for 5th through 8th, Ed Baird (USA), Alinghi, won fifth when he defeated Russell Coutts (NZL), Coutts Racing. Bertrand Pacé (FRA), BMW Oracle Racing, captured 7th when he beat Kelvin Harrap (NZL), Emirates Team New Zealand.
