July 19-24, 2005

UPDATE 23 // July 24, 2005, 5:25 p.m.
Peter Holmberg beat Ben Ainslie 3-1 to win the 2005 PTPortugal Match Cup. Holmberg won the fourth race to clinch the championship after completing a penalty turn on the finish line. In the Petit Final, Peter Gilmour beat Jes Gram-Hansen 2-0. More to come.

UPDATE 22 // July 24, 2005, 1:55 p.m.
Peter Holmberg will square off against Ben Ainslie for the championship of the Portugal Match Cup, Stage 1 of the 2005-’06 Swedish Match Tour. Holmberg beat reigning Tour champ Peter Gilmour 3-1 in one semifinal match, the same score by which Ainslie beat Jes Gram-Hansen.

Holmberg trailed Gilmour in their third race, but got to the right on the second beat to score the come-from-behind victory. In the decider Gilmour was over the line early which gave Holmberg an early advantage and he led by about 15 seconds at the windward mark. Gilmour halved that margin at the leeward mark, but Holmberg upped it back to about 17 seconds at the second windward mark. Gilmour closed again on the run to the finish, but ran out of racecourse and Holmberg won by about one and a half boatlengths.

Ainslie, up 2-0, led Gram-Hansen around the first lap in their third match, but let the Dane get to the right of him on the second beat. Gram-Hansen won to pull within 2-1.

The decider was close throughout, and Ainslie showed great poise in a tight match. He led by just 4 seconds at the first windward mark. But when it seemed that Gram-Hansen would roll over to windward on the run Ainslie luffed him outside the port layline to the leeward mark. Ainslie led by about the same margin at the leeward mark.

The key moment came at the top of the second beat when Ainslie, on port, crossed Gram-Hansen with no more than 2 feet to spare. That allowed him to get around the windward mark in the lead and then he held on for the win, by about 5 seconds.

The final is a first to 3 points series.

The first to score 3 points will advance to the finals with the losers racing in the first to 2 points petit final. UPDATE 20 // July 24, 2005, 10:10 a.m.
The completion of Semifinal Round is first up on the final day of the 2005 PTPortugal Match Cup. Ben Ainslie leads his match against Jes Gram-Hansen 2-0. The other match, between Peter Gilmour and Peter Holmberg, is tied 1-1. The two winners will square off for the championship in a first to 3 points series starting as soon after the semifinals as possible. Racing is scheduled to start shortly after 12:00 p.m.

Last night the international jury disallowed Holmberg’s protest against the race committee over the start of his first match against Gilmour. Gilmour won the match, and Holmberg protested the race committee saying that Gilmour shouldn’t have been scored a finisher because he never started the race.

The protest stemmed from a frantic final 30 seconds of the pre-start. Gilmour tacked to port and forced the starboard-tack Holmberg to do the same. Then Gilmour tacked back to starboard as the start signal sounded. He was on the course side at the signal, which meant he had to restart.

The umpires gave Gilmour a red flag penalty for the incident because he broke a rule and gained control of the match. Gilmour saw the penalty, bore away and jibed, coming up to close-hauled on port tack and completing what the umpires deemed was a penalty turn.

The umpires didn’t realize that Gilmour was OCS, and his penalty turn shouldn’t have been allowed. Gilmour received a subsequent penalty because the umpires felt he had control of the match. Penalizing an infringing boat to keep the race close is a standard practice in match-racing. Gilmour performed that penalty turn at the finish, but Holmberg felt Gilmour still had an outstanding penalty.

The confusion stemmed from the umpires lowering the red flag penalty and deeming that Gilmour had completed his penalty turn. Umpires are only human and mistakes are made sometimes. But the hearing points out the value of the umpiring system. The hearing and deliberation was conducted in about a half hour. It’s a less formal hearing than an official protest in a fleet race, and the competitors don’t end up in a long protracted hearing.
