UPDATE 18 // Aug. 21, 1:10 p.m.

Ed Baird has won the 3rd annual St. Moritz Match Race, Stage 3 of the 2005-’06 Swedish Match Tour. Baird defeated Mark Mendelblatt 3-0 in light winds and a steady rain. Mendelblatt led Baird around the first windward mark in the third race, but Baird was first to jibe to starboard on the run and rolled over Mendelblatt. Mendelblatt closed up a bit on the second beat, but in the light north/northeasterly couldn’t find any passing lanes.

In the Petit Final, Staffan Lindberg executed a penalty turn at the bottom of the second beat and sailed on to win his series against Ian Williams, 2-1.

UPDATE 17 // Aug. 21, 12:25 p.m.

Ed Baird has gone up 2-0 over Mark Mendelblatt in the final of the St. Moritz Match Race. Mendelblatt won the first cross between the two in Race 2, but then got stuck outside the Petit Final pair approaching the windward mark. Baird was able to sneak inside and rounded the windward mark on the inside of a four-boat pinwheel while Mendelblatt was on the outside. Once in the lead Baird covered and extended to win by about 3 boatlengths.

Ian Williams tied his match against Staffan Lindberg in the Petit Final, 1-1. Lindberg was penalized at that windward mark pinwheel, which hindered his chances to close out the series.

UPDATE 16 // Aug. 21, 11:55 a.m.

Ed Baird has taken a 1-0 lead against Mark Mendelblatt in the final of St. Moritz Match Race. Baird started at the committee boat end of the line while Mendelblatt started at the pin end. When the two met the first time on the first leg Baird tacked in front of Mendelblatt to gain control. He rounded the windward mark about a length ahead of Mendelblatt, but extended around the course to win by about 3 lengths.

Staffan Lindberg took a 1-0 lead in the Petit Final over Ian Williams.

UPDATE 15 // Aug. 21, 10:15 a.m.

It’s another chilly, rainy morning at the top of the world in St. Moritz, Switzerland, on the morning of the St. Moritz Match Race Final.

The first to 3 points series pits two-time reigning champion Mark Mendelblatt against Ed Baird of America’s Cup holder Alinghi. In a rare occurrence, Mendelblatt and Baird are not only from the same hometown, St. Petersburg, Fla., but they also live on the same street. Both hail from the St. Petersburg Yacht Club.

“It’s really exciting to have another person from my yacht club and my city to come and be at these events at all, let alone be in the final together,” said Baird, who’s aiming for his fourth career Swedish Match Tour victory today. “So it’s pretty cool. It’s nice to have it happen. Mark has been doing well in his sailing. Winning this event the last of couple years you get nervous racing against him. He’s the king of the hill. Literally. But we’ll do our best and give him a kick where we can.”

The Petit Final pits Ian Williams (GBR) against Staffan Lindberg (FIN) in a first to 2 points series.

The winds are light to non-existent this morning raising the possibility of a postponement in place of the scheduled 11:00 attention signal. The forecast is similar to yesterday in that clearing is expected this afternoon once the rain clears the area.
