The Swedish Match Tour resumed its sixth season last May with the Toscana Elba Cup – Trofeo Locman on Elba Island, off Italy’s Tuscany coast. The Bay of Porto Azzurro is a long and narrow racecourse and well-suited to the southwesterly wind. On Day 3 Peter Gilmour (right) and Ian Ainslie began a run riding a 20-knot puff.
Racing in the Swedish Match 40s Gilmour, to leeward and ahead, was herding Ainslie towards the far shoreline. Both crews had to get in a jibe because a jut in the shore was ahead, but the puff wasn’t abating. Gilmour’s veteran crew snapped off the jibe, but Ainslie’s mates were made to hold tight as he worked to avoid a complete wipe out.
