Peter Gilmour’s win in Croatia tied him with Ed Baird for the Tour championship as the season came to a head last July at the Swedish Match Cup on idyllic Marstrand Island. Splendid weather brought out more than 100,000 people over the final three days, according to police estimates. And they weren’t disappointed. The field had a bevy of stars including Dean Barker, Russell Coutts, Magnus Holmberg, Peter Holmberg and Bertrand Pacé, among others, but all eyes were focused on the start of the third and final quarterfinal match between Gilmour and Baird. It was the race that would decide the season. One race no more than 20 minutes long to decide the winner of $145,000, the sum of a $60,000 bonus for winning the Tour and a BMW 545i Touring valued at $85,000 from Tour partner BMW. Gilmour got the start he wanted, tight on Baird’s leebow, and then sailed to victory in front of nearly 40,000 spectators.
