The 7th season of the Swedish Match Tour began mid-July with the second annual PT Portugal Match Cup and Ben Ainslie (left) staring down Peter Holmberg in the final. Sailing in just his fourth Tour event Ainslie had put forth his best effort and seemed to have the measure of Holmberg in the final. With the series tied 1-1, the four-time Finn Gold Cup champion made a fatal error when he sailed the wrong course. Ainslie and crew failed to notice a course change on the race committee boat at the 4-minute signal and sailed to the wrong windward mark. Instead of leading 2-1, Ainslie trailed by the same score. He got a penalty on Holmberg in the pre-start of the fourth and final flight, but Holmberg led onto the racecourse. He was able to add enough time to his lead on the run to the finish to perform the penalty turn and capture his first Tour victory in more than four years.
