The St. Moritz Match Race was one of two new events that debuted this year on the Tour. Racing on Lake St. Moritz at an elevation of 5,600 feet, St. Moritz Match Race offered more than just high altitude racing. The boat of choice, the Streamline 7.15, was a handful for the skipper and two crewmembers. When was the last time you saw world champions such as Peter Gilmour doing the turtle, or America’s Cup helmsmen like Peter Holmberg jumping over the tiller? It happened in St. Moritz. Fleet races were also a feature of the regatta, and were stunning to behold beneath the 10,000-foot peak Piz Rosatsch.
Holmberg may have been light on his feet but he had his hands full other times. Shortly after rounding the windward mark in a round robin match against Ian Williams, Holmberg was left for dead when Williams luffed him hard. Williams had led around the mark and did his penalty turn. After tacking onto starboard to complete the turn, Williams jibed to port and put himself to leeward of Holmberg. Holmberg went head to wind to keep clear of Williams, but with the Maloja wind gusting to 20 knots chaos reigned for bowman Matt Mitchell.
