A second new event, the Monsoon Cup in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia, closed out the calendar year. It was Stage 4 of the seventh Tour season, which continues next March with the Brazil Sailing Cup (Mar. 14-19, 2006), and also the 50th event of the Swedish Match Tour, which was founded in 2000. The new venue featured shifty winds and tricky converging currents that left it wide open. There were also a lot of close quarter situations, such as between Thierry Peponnet (above, left) and Russell Coutts and Ian Williams (below, left) and Coutts.
In the end it was another win for Gilmour, who defeated Coutts 2-1 in one of the best finals of the year. Gilmour won the first flight when he completed a penalty turn on the finish line. Coutts won the second flight, also completing a penalty turn at the finish. Gilmour then streaked to the championship in the third flight, sailing away from Coutts and winning a final series against Coutts for the first time in two years.
