ABOUT STAGE 1
The 3rd annual Portugal Match Cup kicks off the 2006-’07 World Match Racing Tour, the eighth season of the world’s leading professional sailing series. Racing on the Bay of Cascais is usually a favorite for the sailors because the afternoon winds are strong and challenge crew handling, but also shifty and challenging to tacticians. The SM40, the World Tour’s specially designed match-racer, is the featured boat.
ABOUT LAST SEASON
Peter Gilmour won his third consecutive World Tour championship last season. The title also was his fourth ISAF World Championship of Match Race Sailing, a title awarded in conjunction with the World Tour title. Gilmour won three events last season, including the concluding Locman Cup – Elba Island in Italy last weekend. It was his 11th career victory on the World Tour.
ABOUT THE WORLD TOUR
Skippers earn points towards the world championship at the nine events of the World Tour and the highest scoring skipper at the end of the season is the ISAF Match Racing World Champion. The World Champion wins a BMW from partner and Official Car BMW and a cash bonus from the World Tour.
The World Tour is sanctioned by ISAF, sailing’s world governing body. World Tour sponsors include Sebago (Rockford, Mich.), the Official Footwear Supplier, Travel Places (West Sussex, England), the Official Travel Partner, and Wedgwood (Stoke-on-Trent, England), the Official Trophy Sponsor.
