HAMILTON, Bermuda (Oct. 13, 2006) — Due to the threat of severe weather the Quarterfinal Round of the 58th annual King Edward VII Gold Cup, Stage 4 of the 2006-’07 World Match Racing Tour, has been postponed until tomorrow.
At 1:00 p.m. Bermuda Weather Service issued a severe weather warning. A storm forming to the west and southwest had the potential to bring 50-knot winds, thunder and lightning.
“Due to the threat of severe weather, we decided to postpone racing for the day,” said Event Chairman Les Crane. “There’s a chance of tornadoes and water spouts with this storm, and we felt the prudent decision was to postpone racing for the day. Localized tornadoes and water spouts are not uncommon here, but they’re far from the ‘Kansas’ variety.”
Tomorrow’s skippers’ meeting is scheduled for 7:00 a.m., with the first signal scheduled for 8:00 a.m. Presently there is no plan to reduce the round from its current first-to-3 points format. The semifinals will be conducted as soon after the quarterfinals as possible. The Final is planned for Sunday.
The quarterfinal matches pit James Spithill (AUS) versus Eric Monnin (SUI), Björn Hansen (SWE) against Ian Williams (GBR), Staffan Lindberg (FIN) against Blythe Walker (GBR) and Chris Law (GBR) versus Mathieu Richard (FRA).
The Bermuda Department of Tourism is an Official Host Sponsor of the Gold Cup. Event sponsors include Renaissance Re, Max Re, Bermuda Telephone, Bermuda Premium Spirits and Oleander Cycle.
The World Tour is sanctioned by ISAF, sailing’s world governing body. The World Tour Partner and Official Car is BMW (Munich, Germany). World Tour sponsors include Sebago (Rockford, Mich.), the Official Footwear Supplier, Travel Places (West Sussex, England), the Official Travel Partner, and Wedgwood (Stoke-on-Trent, England), the Official Trophy Sponsor.
