It was a glorious day for sailing in the mountains on Wednesday, for the first day of the St. Moritz Match Race. Bright sunshine and warm temperatures ensured the grand stand built on the shore of Lake St. Moritz was full, and moderate to strong winds challenged the race crews all the way around the race course.

The 12 strong fleet was divided into two groups of six for Round Robin Racing. In Group A, Ian Williams (GBR), the current leader of the World Match Racing Tour, swept through his division, displaying strong boat handling, and classic match racing technique en route to a 5-0 record.

Also performing well in Group A was Sébastien Col (FRA), who sits on a 4-1 record, his only blemish being a loss to Williams in a close match to finish the racing. Close behind was Peter Evans (NZL) at 3-2, filling in admirably for the injured Jochen Schuemann. Those top three teams in Group A qualify directly for the Quarter Final.

The bottom half of the table, including Evgeny Neugodnikov (RUS) on a 2-3 record, Michael Hestbaek (GER) at 1-4 and Matteo Simoncelli (ITA) with no wins and five losses will have to hope to advance through a Repechage round tomorrow.

The Round Robin racing in Group B is scheduled to start later this (Wednesday) afternoon.

(All results provisional pending protests)
