Race Officer Christian Scherrer has a full programme lined up for Saturday at the latest stop on the World Match Racing Tour, the St. Moritz Match Race. And with the sun burning off some early morning cloud, the forecast for good winds in the afternoon should help him.
First up are Quarter Finals A and B, which haven’t sailed any races to this point. World Match Racing Tour leader Ian Williams and his Team Pindar are up against Swiss hero Matthias Renker who qualified through the Repechage round.
Also on the race course this morning is the Swiss sailor Eric Monnin against a tough Alinghi team that has Peter Evans subbing on the helm for the injured Jochen Schuemann.
Once Quarter Finals A and B are finished, the other two Quarter Final pairings will resume their match ups. Here, two-time St. Moritz Match Race winner Mark Mendelblatt leads Sebastien Col 2-0 while defending champion Paolo Cian leads Mathieu Richard 2-1.
Each Quarter Final pairing is currently a ‘first to three’ match-up, where the first team to win three points advances to the Semi Final. But Race Officer Christian Scherrer has reserved the right to make them a ‘first to two’ series if it becomes necessary to keep the programme moving.
Looking ahead to Sunday, the forecast is calling for lighter conditions, so Scherrer and the teams are anxious to squeeze as much racing out of today as possible.
