| TOP FOUR TO BE DECIDED TODAY |
| Sunday, 19 August 2007 |
The top four places at the St. Moritz Match Race will be decided on Lake St. Moritz Sunday as the Final and Petite Final of the latest stop on the World Match Racing Tour get underway.
There’s plenty at stake today. Not only are valuable World Match Racing Tour points up for grabs, but there is considerable prize money to won. The winner will collect a cheque for 35 000 Swiss francs; overall the St. Moritz Match Race is distributing 150 000 Swiss francs in prize money - nearly US $ 125 000.
At the top, Ian Williams and his Team Pindar, who are undefeated this week, take on Mark Mendelblatt’s Team Kaenon. Mendelblatt is a two-time winner in St. Moritz and his team features sailors from three America’s Cup teams. Mendelblatt was with Emirates Team New Zealand, while Ed Smythe sailed with BMW ORACLE Racing and Cameron Dunn was with Mascalzone Latino-Capitalia.
Williams decided to choose which boat he would sail in Final, leaving Mendelblatt to have the advantage of starboard tack entry to the startline for the first race.
In the Petite Final, Paolo Cian, who won this event last year, is up against the local favourite Eric Monnin and his brothers. Cian, with Team Shosholoza at the last America’s Cup also decided to choose which of the two boats he would sail, so Monnin has the starboard tack entry.
Racing is scheduled to start at 11:00, but it is likely a short postponement will be needed to allow the wind to build. The sun is doing an admirable job of burning off the morning cloud, and as the land heats up, a Southerly wind is expected to develop near noon.
