Damien Iehl qualifies for Match Cup Sweden
|
The final day of GKSS Spring Cup started out with three consecutive victories by Staffan Lindberg of Alandia Sailing Team in very light winds – the prelude to a very exiting afternoon. Damien Iehl and his French Match Racing Team, were in the same group as Staffan Lindberg, and also won three matches, putting severe pressure on Johnie Berntsson,GKSS, who was in the tied second spot after the first day of racing.
A ticket to Match Cup Sweden 2008 was at stake in the receding afternoon winds and Johnie Berntsson started out very successfully. The ticket was within reach, but in the match against Linda Rahm she quelled his ambitions during the first tack and Johnie Berntsson simply could not catch up. After completing the Round Robin three skippers were in the lead, tied at nine points:Damien Iehl, Staffan Lindberg and Mattias Rahm. Due to light winds and lack of time,the Race Committee had to skip the semi-finals and move straight to the finals,putting aside Mattias Rahm, who had lost to Damien and Staffan in their previous two flights.
Two consecutive and convincing victories over Staffan Lindberg then made Damien Iehl the final winner of GKSS Spring Cup, also qualifying him to Match Cup Sweden 2008 in Marstrand. An official invitation was extended to Damien Iehl during the concluding prize giving ceremony.
